The long-term absence of teeth leads to various functional and morphological disorders. The nature of the load on the periodontal tissues changes, the bioelectric activity of the masticatory muscles decreases, and a new type of chewing occurs. This leads to atrophic changes in the temporomandibular joint and the bone tissues of the maxillofacial system. Atrophy of the vestibular surface predominates in the upper jaw, while a significant atrophy of the lingual surface is observed in the lower jaw. As a result, the alveolar arch in the upper jaw decreases in size, and in the lower jaw it increases.
